This project has received funding from Enterprise Ireland and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 847402.
Background
Glanbia Ireland is an ambitious, integrated agri-food and nutrition business, with a diverse portfolio of quality ingredients, leading consumer brands. Building on previously research focusing on the characterisation and validation of immune-modulating bioactives isolated from milk protein, this project investigates a wide range of protein sources for novel food ingredients that can modulate the immune system.
The Commercial Opportunity
Immune support has emerged as one of the key health areas that consumers are seeking to improve, and with the global market for this category expected to grow to €43.9bn by 2030, there is an opportunity to develop immune support ingredients that are backed up by robust science.
The Innovative Solution
This project is exploring the capacity of novel food bioactives for improving overall immune function, including immune responses to viruses and bacteria and the maintenance of an immune balance which improves overall health.
The Research Impact
The project will provide proof of principle of the effects of novel food bioactives in the immune system in preclinical models and will allow Glanbia Ireland to reliably assess the commercial viability of these ingredients.
